Going it alone in La Habana Cuba.

If you can speak a little spanish, enjoying a
vacation in the oldest city in the Americas,
is safe and enjoyable. You can meet the cuban
people, who are very friendly, and see Cuba,
away from the all inclusive resorts.

Education.
Spanish language courses are available to
visitors at the Universidad de Habana. The
courses are for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks, and cost
100, 200, 240, and 300 Convertible Pesos,
Courses begin on the first monday of the month
for beginners to advanced students.
You need a student visa to take the courses.
The university staff will assist you to obtain
the visa at a cost of 65 Convertible Pesos.

Accomodation.
A good way to meet the cuban people and enjoy
the cuban culture, is to stay in a casa
particular. These can be rooms or apartments
for rent in private homes.
In La Habana these accomodations cost between
25 to 40 Convertible Pesos per day.

Shopping.
If you stay at a casa particular you can do
your own cooking, and then you will need to
shop for food.
A good place to shop, is the main commercial
street, Salvador Allende. There is a shopping
mall, on this street, where you can obtain
most supplies. There is a bank in the mall.

Money.
You will need to pay cash, for anything you
purchase in La Habana. Stores and restaurants
do not accept credit cards. However the bank
does accept credit cards. The easiest, safest,
and most economical way to handle your money,
is to obtain some cuban money on arrival at
the airport, and then draw the cash you need
every couple of days, using your credit card
at the bank.
